About

Many people believe that glasses don’t suit them.
Before founding ayame, I had the same concern.

In Japan, eyewear making is a craft. Some artisans follow traditional methods and carry out every step of the process themselves. This dedication allows them to continue making the same designs to a high standard. Overseas, by contrast, eyewear tends to focus on style, visual impact, and brand concept, while fit is rarely given the same attention.

That is why ayame began.

We set out to create modern eyewear that considers the features of Asian faces: simple, comfortable to wear, and in tune with the spirit of the times. We wanted to build on craftsmanship, offer repairs, and welcome customers with the warmth of a neighborhood optician.

Of course, we couldn’t do this alone. We visited Sabae, Japan’s eyewear-making center, many times and learned from the artisans there. We shared meals, talked, and built friendships over drinks.

At our directly operated store in Sendagaya, the same staff have welcomed customers for many years. I believe that continuity has helped us stay close to our customers.

“Do you still have that model I bought years ago?”
“I broke the vintage frames I used to wear all the time.”

We listen even to small requests like these, because they can lead to new designs. ayame will continue to talk with our customers, learn from them, and stay true to this approach.
